What does it mean?
A charging mechanism whereby an advertiser pays for every thousand impressions the advert appears on a website.
What should you aim for?
CPM was the default charging mechanism in the early days of the Internet, as this matched media charges in the offline world. But ultimately CPM became outmoded because advertisers don’t actually get any guaranteed visitors – and that’s what they like. CPM still exists however. Niche websities charge as much as £30PM. General networks are nearer £0.50CPM.
